ASTM A53 Steel Pipe Specifications
ASTM A53 Steel Pipe is a carbon steel, alloy steel, which can be used as structural steel or for low-pressure pipelines.
ASTM A53 (ASME SA53) carbon steel pipe is a specification that covers seamless and welded black and hot-dipped galvanized steel pipe in NPS 1/8″ to NPS 26. A 53 is intended for pressure and mechanical applications and is also acceptable for ordinary uses in steam, water, gas, and air lines.
ASTM A53 Steel Pipe comes in three types (F, E, S) and two grades (A, B).
A53 Type F is manufactured with a furnace butt weld or may have a continuous weld (Grade A only)
A53 Type E has an electric resistance weld (Grades A and B)
A53 Type S is a seamless pipe and found in Grades A and B)
A53 Grade B Seamless steel pipe is our most polar product under this specification and A53 steel pipe is commonly dual certified to A106 Gr.B Seamless steel pipe.
ASTM A53 seamless steel pipe is an American standard brand. A53-F corresponds to Chinas Q235 material, A53-A corresponds to Chinas No. 10 material, and A53-B corresponds to Chinas No. 20 material.
ASTM A53 seamless steel pipe manufacturing process is divided into hot-rolled and cold seamless steel pipe.
1. Production process of hot-rolled seamless steel pipe: tube billet → heating → perforation → three-roller/cross-rolling & continuous rolling → de-pipe → sizing → cooling → straightening → hydraulic test → marking → seamless steel pipe with leverage effect detected.
2. Production process of cold drawn seamless steel tubes: tube blank → heating → perforation → heading → annealing → pickling → oiling → multiple cold drawing → blank tube → heat treatment → straightening → hydraulic test → marking → storage.
ASTM A53 seamless steel pipe Applications
1. Construction: the pipeline underneath, the groundwater, and the hot water transportation.
2. Mechanical processing, bearing sleeves, processing machinery parts, etc.
3. Electrical: Gas delivery, Hydroelectric power fluid pipeline
4. Anti-static tubes for wind power plants, etc.
ASTM A53 Steel Pipe
Black or Hot-Dip Galvanized, Welded & Seamless Steel Pipe
Totten Tubes supplies ASTM A53 seamless steel pipe in a broad range of sizes to fit any project requirements. A53 steel pipe is intended mechanical and pressure applications, but is also acceptable for and widely used in air, water, steam, and gas lines. A53 pipe is suitable for welding.
ASTM A53 is suitable for a variety of forming processes, including coiling, bending, and flanging; continuous weld pipe (Type F) is not suitable for flanging. Please note the use/application of the pipe you require on your RFQ and/or when ordering.

The aspects of the ASTM A53 specification most relevant to our purposes is as follows:
A53 Pipe Materials & Manufacture
Steel materials used to create seamless pipe and welded pipe must be produced via open hearth, electric furnace, basic oxygen, or any combination of these processes. All weld seams in electric-resistance welded A53 Grade B pipe must be heat treated after welding to a minimum of 1,000°F (540°C) to eliminate untempered martensite.
Galvanized A53 Pipe
If ordered galvanized, A53 seamless pipe must be coated inside and out via the hot-dip process. Zinc used for galvanized coatings must conform to Specification B6. The weight of this coating must not be less than 1.8 oz./ft2 (0.55 kg/m2). Test specimens for coating weight testing will be cut in approximately 4" lengths.
Permissible Variation in Wall Thickness
The minimum wall thickness at any point in a length of A53 steel pipe must not be more than 12.5% less than the specified wall thickness.
Permissible Variations in Outside Diameter
For ASTM A53 steel pipe NPS 1-1/2 and smaller, outside diameter must not exceed 1/64" over and 1/32" under specified diameter. For A53 pipe NPS2 and larger, outside diameter must not exceed 1% over and 1% under specified diameter.
